Originate & Develop Concepts

  • Offical Project Program 2022

I used folding and cutting techniques to create the original brochure design, and then refined this by calculating the exact measurements of each section of the brochure. I also took inspiration from the internet when coming up with my two designs. The Challenge I faced was trying to fit a design on an A3 sheet without making the final design too big. I solved this by folding the initial paper into thirds to cut down on size, however the final design was a bit bulkier than intended. The ideas I came up with were improved versions of designs I had taken inspiration from. I made sure to not copy anything exactly to ensure i did not plagiarize anyones work. The final design is an interactive square users can unfold to reveal new information about the exhibition. The design had to be simple enough for anyone to be able to open and close the brochure with ease, but still have an interesting design. The design also had to have sufficient spaces so no information text had to be small, or no pictures were to be cut off.

Overall, I really enjoyed the process of different paper folding techniques to create two brochure designs. Before I started creating the brochures, I looked on Pinterest for inspiration on different folds and layouts, which then allowed me to adapt certain designs and apply it to my own ideas. I initially produced around six different designs to explore a variety of layouts to visualise what would work best, as not only did I want to produce a creative brochure design, I also wanted to ensure it could be opened with ease and the information and images could be understood and followed when arranged on the brochure. The main challenge I came across while creating the brochures was not getting the edges and creases of the paper to align with each other and be of equal width on the first go, especially if the design had a lot of intricate folds, however, after rearranging and refolding the paper a few times I successfully achieved two clean brochure designs. I received very positive feedback from verges on both of my designs, however, he did have more of a preference for the triangle brochure as it had a very creative design with more intricate folds.

Exhibition Preparation Graduate Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design and Advanced Interior Design Team for “A Second Chance Project at Swinburne, Hawthorn

Q & A

1. Does the second chance project have its own style guide and anythings that may include specific fonts or colours that are already defined?

The Second Chance Project was established in 2019. Have an early version of the A Second Chance Project that has been modified a few times to change the project needs. Do not have an official design guideline and therefore Graphic Design Team needs to be on board to understand principal, spacing to create the style guide, there is a powerpoint and some examples in modules, “A Second Chance Project” is cannot be changed. Typeface  should be chosen in regards to the current ones that are being used.

2. Who is designing the exhibition itself, is that a part of our job?

We are able to propose relevant and necessary things we need, once we establish the guidelines we are able to define what we would need, such as some signage, brochures etc. Minimum of three applications we need to complete, such as banner, invites, etc and would be good to think outside the box for some things we could propose.

3. What is actually being showcased at the Exhibition?

There are three parts: Learn, Design and Collect. Interior design graduates will put their own A3 Banners and Portfolio on display to promote their own projects. Need to look at what the Graphic Design and Interior Design Team are proposing. There will be two small intersection tables with four parts. There are videos and recordings that will play in the background. There is insight on the instagram and website about how it was done in the previous year.

4. How do the attendees hear about the event?

Send out physical invitations. Gift Voucher and catering card when arrive at the event. Possibility of having physical invitations, programs and brochures while trying to minimise the wastage. Digital version is a must to send out. Limit wastage and make it work keeping.

5. When will the interior designers finish their part of the project?

The team are currently doing spacial design planning and research and it should be complete by week six. Week seven is when Interior and Graphic Design Team will meet and pair up.

6. Is there a particular mood for the exhibition?

Up to the individuals - not too dark, depressing, gloomy or serious. Delightful and welcoming would be a good mood to set for the project as A Second Chance Project is aimed at people who are homeless for the short term or one night as well those who are homeless for a prolonged period of time.

7. In terms of the marketing and advertising at the exhibition, were there any problems and issues that could be addressed?

It is always to look at the design guidelines and look at application and output and it also depends on client last minute changes. Look at things that may be offensive to audiences, time and budget is important, potentially cutting costs. Ensure you stick with the deadline, Time and Budget need to be considered.

8. Are there any assets that will be provided or any photos that need to be included?

A picture tells a thousand words and sometimes an audience can be captured with one image, it  could be important to use images, graphic components, sketches or whatever the individual comes up with to use and communicate. The individual is encouraged to explore and think creatively.
